Rivers State Lawmaker Arrested by Police with Foreign Currency and Distribution List

A member of the House of Representatives, Hon Chinyere Igwe representing Port Harcourt II Federal Constituency has been arrested by the Rivers State Police Command.

The arrest was made on Friday by police officers on stop and search duty at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Headquarters on Aba Road.

According to a statement released by police spokesperson Grace Iringe-Koko, Igwe was found in possession of a bag containing $498,100 USD in foreign currency, as well as a list detailing how the money was to be distributed.

The police spokesperson further revealed that the AIG Election, AIG Abutu Yaro fdc has ordered for swift interrogation and arraignment of Hon Chinyere Igwe in court.

The Rivers State Police Command also urged all contestants and political parties to comply strictly with the provisions of the Electoral Act and other relevant laws.
In addition, members of the public have been urged to report any suspicious observations they believe may lead to a breakdown of law and order or other criminal activities through the provided hotlines: 08032003514 and 08098880134.

The arrest of the lawmaker is a clear indication of the police force's commitment to ensuring free and fair elections in the state.

It also sends a strong message to other political actors that the police will not condone any acts of corruption or electoral malpractices during the upcoming elections.
