A car bomb exploded in central Beirut on Friday, killing former ambassador to the U.S, as well as at least five other people. The Lebanese Red Cross said five people were killed and at least 15 were critically injured.
Mohamad Chatah served as finance minister, Lebanese ambassador to the U.S. and representative to International Monetary Fund, and was an opponent of Shiite militant group Hezbollah.
He was considered a moderate politician who advocated openly for a United Nations special tribunal investigation into the 2005 assassination of Hariri’s father, former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri. No group claimed responsibility for Friday’s bombing.
