Nigeria: Dr Alkassim Ibrahim, a doctor at the Bauchi State Veterinary Clinic, said on Thursday in Bauchi that cats could be used to reduce the prevalence of lassa fever.
Ibrahim said that was possible because cats were expellers of rats from the environment. He advised people to keep cats in their houses to help them expel rats from the homes.
``Cats also have their own diseases that can affect human beings, therefore, all the necessary precaution should be taken by visiting veterinary clinics constantly for proper treatment and guidance on how to keep cats.’’ He said
In his contribution, the chief Medical Director, Bauchi Specialist Hospital, Dr Zailani Isa, confirmed that Lassa fever could be prevented through the rearing of cats in the home.
He, however, said that the cat had its own peculiar diseases and that if not properly immunised, it could cause blindness in humans...
