UNITED KINGDOM — In a shocking and devastating trial that spanned nine months, Lucy Letby, a former nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital, has been found guilty of multiple charges of attempted murder, making her the most prolific child killer in modern times in the UK. Letby, who was in her mid-20s at the time of the murders, was convicted of seven counts of attempted murder, including two involving the same infant. The verdicts were delivered in a series of partial verdicts, with the judge imposing reporting restrictions until the conclusion of the trial.

As the guilty verdicts were read out, Letby cried, while the families of the victims sobbed and comforted each other in the courtroom. The emotional toll of the trial was evident, with one juror also shedding tears and holding her head in her hands. Letby was, however, found not guilty of two charges of attempted murder, and the jury was unable to reach verdicts on six further counts.

Letby's mother, Susan, broke down in tears as her daughter was led away from the dock after the first set of verdicts. She whispered in her husband's arms, expressing disbelief and stating that "this can't be right." Neither Letby nor her parents were present in court as the trial reached its conclusion. During a later set of verdicts, Letby refused to appear in the courtroom and was found guilty of more murders in her absence.

The names of all the children involved have been withheld to grant them anonymity, although their names were mentioned in the courtroom during the trial. Among the victims were twin brothers, known as Child L and M, who were born prematurely and were only a few days old when Letby attempted to kill them within hours of each other in April 2016.

In a rare public statement, the parents of the twin boys described Letby as acting "very cool and calm" after trying to murder one of the infants with an injection of excessive air. They recalled a shift in her behavior and demeanor, stating that she became annoyed with them, believing that she couldn't succeed in killing their baby.

The outcome of this trial marks a chilling chapter in the healthcare system's history, as Letby's actions raise significant concerns about patient safety and trust within hospitals. The devastating impact on the families involved cannot be understated, and they will need support to navigate the challenges that lie ahead.
